Patti Smith talks about her first poetry performance – in 1971 at St Mark’s Church in New York’s Bowery – as if it were yesterday. “I remember everything,” she says over the phone from her home in New York. Smith was in her early 20s, working at a bookshop and living in the Chelsea Hotel with her then lover, the playwright Sam Shepard. She had attended poetry readings before, most of which put her into a deep sleep. “I wanted to do something that wasn’t boring,” she recalls. “Sam said that since I sang to myself all the time, I should try singing a song, or maybe do something with a guitar.” And so she called ....

Patti Smith will ring in the new year with a tribute to NHS and healthcare workers who have died from Covid-19, to be shown on the big screen at Piccadilly Circus.
The musician, 73, and her band will ring in 2021 with a 10-minute performance at midnight, shown on the Piccadilly Lights screen and streamed around the world on the YouTube channel of digital art platform Circa.
Visitors to Piccadilly Circus will be encouraged to wear a face mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.
The performance will be a gift from the American singer-songwriter to London, a city she loves. ....

American Punk Rock legend Patti Smith and Golden Lion, Venice Biennale winner, German artist Anne Imhof will ring in 2021 online.
A moving tribute to 100 NHS and healthcare workers who passed away this year from COVID-19
Patti Smith and her Band will mark the beginning of 2021 with a 10-minute performance at midnight online. Anne Imhof will show her digital piece ‘ONE’ in the lead up to the New Year. This is a gift to London, the city that Smith loves, the event will be streamed around the world for free, via the CIRCA YouTube channel on Thursday 31st December, 23.45 GMT.
In a run-up to midnight, CIRCA will present ‘ONE’ a major new 10-minute commission by the winner of the Venice Art Biennale 2017, Anne Imhof using footage filmed at the Tate Modern during the artist’s large-scale installation and performance in 2019. Piccadilly Circus will be washed in the glow of a setting sun, whilst the video counts down to midnight and the arrival of a new year. ....
