Thiruvananthapuram: A Central Bureau of Investigation court here on Wednesday handed out life imprisonment to the two key accused, a priest Father Thomas M Kottoor and a nun, Sister Sephy, in the murder of Sr Abhaya, a nun in Kottayam in 1992.
Both were also fined Rs500,000 each. Kottoor was fined an additional Rs100,000 for trespass into the convent where the murder was committed.
The court had found them guilty on Tuesday and the judge K Sanalkumar announced the punishment for the two on Wednesday. Kottoor s counsel had requested for a lenient punishment considering his age and that he was a cancer patient. Sephy’s counsel pointed out that she had to take care of her aged parents. The court announced the punishment after listening to the defendants’ pleas.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday sentenced Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sefi to life imprisonment for the murder of a nun in Kerala 28 years ago,
Live Law reported. Sister Abhaya was found dead in a well in the St Pius X Convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992, at the age of 18.

The two prime accused found guilty of killing teenaged nun Sister Abhaya have been sentenced to life imprisonment, almost 28 years after the gruesome murder shook the country.
The punishment for the duo in the longest-running investigation was pronounced by CBI special court judge K Sanal Kumar who also slapped a penalty of five lakh rupees on the two convicts.
Twenty-one-year-old sister Abhaya was found dead in the well of Pius X convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992. The first accused priest, father Thomas Kottoor, and third accused sister Sephy faced trial.
