I m not looking for citizens to get ticketed, he said at Monday s city council meeting. That s not my job to go out there and say, let s be punitive right away. But if we could develop a plan, like a good neighbor plan where our police officers can go by and put a warning, just like the state highway patrol will from time to time do if you re speeding and say hey, slow it down. We re saying, get your car off the sidewalks. If we come by again, then we re going to cite you. ....
NEW PHILADELPHIA City council members and officials with New Philadelphia City Schools held separate meetings this week to talk about a new lease for Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium, with discussions continuing to focus on public access to the facility. Meanwhile, the school district is looking at making repairs to the stadium this summer to address problems with crumbling brickwork and a boiler that needs replaced. Council s finance committee discussed the lease on Monday. Councilman Rob Maurer, who chairs the committee, said the issue should be expedited because of the needed repairs at the stadium. The two sides have been discussing a new 50-year lease since October. The stadium is owned by the school district but the land is owned by the city. ....
When the annual Rainbow Connection Telethon takes place from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, it will already be off to a solid start. As is often the case, students from area schools help raise money for the Tuscarawas County agency’s primary fundraiser each year. One of those is New Philadelphia’s Central Elementary, which only has fifth-graders this year. “We started with a $1,000 goal, which we met pretty quickly,” Principal John Zucal said. “We raised it to $1,500, then to $2,000 and that wasn’t a problem. We ended up raising over $3,100. Michelle Pipes, our Student Leadership Advisor, said, ‘Do you realize that a Corporate Sponsorship is $2,500 and we surpassed that. I shared that with the kids, and we’re extremely pleased with what we were able to do.” ....
NEW PHILADELPHIA City council is considering granting a 50% tax abatement for 10 years to a developer that hopes to build a hotel on W. High Avenue near I-77. Officials with SAI Hospitality of Monclova, Ohio, outlined plans for the proposed hotel at a meeting Monday of city council s finance committee. The 88-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott would be built at 1298 W. High Ave. between Hog Heaven and the Tuscarawas River. The four-story, 52,000-square-foot structure would have a pool and meeting room. Total cost of the project would be $8.7 million. The hotel would create 14 full- and part-time jobs with a payroll of around $320,000 per year. ....
