Jail contract is to be restored; calls for sheriff’s resignation
ELLSWORTH — Community members and Hancock County Commissioner John Wombacher have called for Sheriff Scott Kane’s resignation over Kane’s decision last spring to terminate Healthy Acadia’s recovery coaching services to Hancock County Jail inmates. That decision came after Healthy Acadia issued a statement supporting Black Lives Matter.
At the start of a commissioners meeting held virtually Tuesday, board Chairman Bill Clark said details of an agreement should be finished this week to return recovery coaching to the jail as soon as Friday.
Kane said previously he disagreed with allowing an organization in the jail that supports a movement that he says wants to harm law enforcement. In June, Kane and Healthy Acadia Executive Director Elsie Flemings exchanged a string of emails discussing the sheriff’s concerns with Healthy Acadia’s statement on Black Lives Matter. Ther ....

Recovery coaches could return to jail to treat inmates soon
ELLSWORTH Healthy Acadia’s recovery coaches could be back in the Hancock County Jail early this week depending on how negotiations go Monday between County Commissioner Bill Clark, Healthy Acadia Executive Director Elsie Flemings and Sheriff Scott Kane.
Kane canceled the contract after Healthy Acadia issued a June 10, 2020, statement in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Kane disagreed with allowing an organization in the jail that supports a movement that he says wants to harm law enforcement.
The Hancock County Commissioners met Saturday evening via Zoom, an online meeting platform. ....

Commissioners weigh pot sales
ELLSWORTH The Hancock County Commissioners met with Maine officials Tuesday to find out more information about “opting in” to allow commercial marijuana enterprises in the unorganized territories. The discussion took place via the online meeting platform Zoom.
There was no resolution reached and no action was taken.
However, Commissioner John Wombacher chided his fellow board members about their attitude regarding marijuana-related commercial activity in the territories.
Both Commissioner Bill Clark and Commissioner Paul Paradis had said previously they would not support “adult use” marijuana operations in the unorganized territories.
Wombacher reminded the board that it has spent time in the past year working on economic development in the unorganized territories. ....

Airline owes airport almost $14,000 - The Ellsworth American

Airline owes airport almost $14,000
TRENTON Hancock County intends to explore collection efforts against Silver Airways, which hasn’t paid the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport for services rendered since June of 2020. Silver Airways offered daily nonstop service between Bar Harbor and Boston for the past two summer seasons. However, the airline’s contract with the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide service at the Trenton airport expired Oct. 14, Airport Manager Leroy Muise said. Cape Air took over the contract on Oct. 15.
Muise said the airport has not received payments from Silver Airways for the months of July, August, September and October. The total due is $13,697. That figure stems from fees for passenger enplanement, aircraft landing, rental space on the electronic road sign and ground service equipment rental, Muise said. The overdue payment came up at the Jan. 5 meeting of the Hancock County Commissioners. ....

Marijuana issue is a "tough sell" - The Ellsworth AmericanThe Ellsworth American

Marijuana issue is a “tough sell”
ELLSWORTH — Residents of Hancock County’s unorganized territories who spoke at a Dec. 1 Hancock County Commissioners’ meeting in support of the board “opting in” to allow commercial marijuana operations in the territories may be disappointed.
Both newly sworn-in Commissioner Paul Paradis and longtime former sheriff and Commissioner Bill Clark said during the board’s first meeting of 2021 on Tuesday that they were not in favor of opting in. The board has three members.
Municipalities have to “opt in” to allow marijuana businesses, whether medical or commercial, and so do Maine counties when it comes to the unorganized territories. And then there are decisions pertaining to which types of commercial marijuana businesses will be allowed. Will a town, city or county allow retail marijuana establishments, cultivation, testing, processing or any or all of those activities that fall under the ....
