Leaders from 10 towns across Siskiyou County came together to share information and ideas last Wednesday during the League of Local Agencies of Siskiyou County s quarterly meeting in Dunsmuir.
Better known simply as LOLA, the group meets every three months at various Siskiyou County locations.
We exchange ideas during these quarterly networking meetings so we can learn from each other and spark new ideas, said Mount Shasta City Councilor Tim Stearns.  We ve been doing this for 30 to 40 years.
The July 21 meeting was attended by representatives from Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta, McCloud, Dorris, Etna, Fort Jones, Montague, Tulelake, Weed and Yreka, as well as District 2 supervisor Ed Valenzuela, Siskiyou Economic Development Executive Director Tonya Dowse, and Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue. Each shared their strategies to build strength in the county by sharing what s happening in all corners of Siskiyou. ....

Mt. Shasta General Plan 2045: city council asked to slow process, consider more public input

Mt. Shasta General Plan 2045: city council asked to slow process, consider more public input
Mount Shasta Herald
In a 4-1 decision Monday evening, Mount Shasta city councilors voted to continue with the General Plan 2045 process, with Tim Stearns – who has been airing concerns about the proposed plan for weeks – casting the sole no vote.
The update of the city s general plan is a blazing hot topic, with people concerned that changes proposed in the draft are too sweeping for a city of Mount Shasta s size and character.
I have been going through public comment from both meetings, and my concern is that we ve got the cart way in front of the horse, said City Attorney John Kenny. During the meeting, which had been continued from last week due to Zoom s cap on meeting participants, Kenny took a moment to remind the council that the plan is not set in stone and that its ultimately a project of the city s planning commission. ....

These nonprofits got a little slice of Mount Shasta's budget

These nonprofits got a little slice of Mount Shasta s budget
Mount Shasta Herald
Mount Shasta city councilors last Monday heard the city s budget is in the black – despite challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic – and decided to allocate funds to the Visitor s Center, the Siskiyou Economic Development Council, Meals on Wheels, and Sisson Museum.
Although the city has suffered loss, finance director Muriel Howarth Terrell said that loss is balancing out with new income from sales, Transient Occupancy Tax and property tax dollars because people continue to travel to Mount Shasta, and local people are shopping close to home.
“The difficulty is, yes we are doing better in sales and property taxes – but not on expenditures,” said Howarth Terrell. ....

OPINION: Logging will increase wildfire risk for mountain towns

OPINION: Logging will increase wildfire risk for mountain towns
Karen Maki, Jeff Stone, and Raven Stevens for We Advocate Thorough Environmental Review
Over four million acres burned in California in 2020. Despite this unprecedented climate disaster, CalFire is poised to increase future wildfire risk for residents of Dunsmuir, Mt. Shasta City, McCloud and Castella by approving the Soda Springs Timber Harvest Plan, which would use an unnecessarily dangerous even-aged logging method, similar to clearcutting.
California officials and state agencies have repeatedly called for additional thinning to remove underbrush and small trees to reduce wildfire risk, but they do nothing to stop logging plans that create the same dense small trees. The Soda Springs THP is especially dangerous because it is so close to towns, and hence will expose residents to increased fire danger. One may remember that the 2018 Carr and Delta Fires that threatened these same towns burned through plan ....
