The democratic republic of the congo as the vast african nation is known today has had a long tragic history marked by centuries of exploitation of its rich minerals, its people, and its wildlife, but it also remains a land of resilience and resistance to ingest an injury filled with individuals who today are fighting back against the forces of International Exploitation and deadly government crackdowns to make things better for their communities and their families. This dichotomy is powerfully described and explored in the new book, congo stories, battl ing five centuries of exploitation and greed. But the question is, are we doing enough . Congress has acted in a bipartisan way to provide the administration with new tools to combat and disrupt and deter those who would do america harm. The countering americas adversaries through sanctions act which was authored by myself and mr. Elliot engel, empowered the administration with some of the most potent weapons yet. And to its credit the administration has acted since january 2017 more than 200 russian individuals and entities have been designated for sanctions under casa and other existing laws. Hundreds of millions of dollars in assets have been blocked. That said, we should be doing more. We should be doing more to hold putin accountable for his aggressive acts including attacks on our democracy. The administration should use authorities included in section 228 to cast a wider net.
