BYU-Hawaii Students Required to Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19

Brigham Young University in Lāʻie is one of two Hawaiʻi private schools of any education level requiring students to get the COVID-19 vaccine before stepping foot on campus.
The Conversation spoke with President John Kauwe to understand the mandatory vaccine policy for students BYU’s other campuses are not requiring the vaccine.
ʻIolani School, also on Oʻahu, is requiring the vaccine for older students.
The vaccine is extremely effective, it s very safe. Just like those at ʻIolani did, we explored and carefully considered all the available data about the various COVID-19 vaccines, their safety, their efficacy, Kauwe said. ....

For years, research to pin down the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s Disease has been focused on plaque found to be building up in the brain in AD patients. But treatments targeted at breaking down that buildup have been ineffective in restoring cognitive function, suggesting that the buildup may be a side effect of AD and not the cause itself.
A new study from a team of BYU researchers finds novel cellular-level support for an alternate theory that is growing in strength: Alzheimer’s could actually be a result of metabolic dysfunction in the brain. In other words, there is growing evidence that diet and lifestyle are at the heart of Alzheimer’s Disease. ....

Kiaran Loefke, a fall 2020 BYU–Hawaii alumna and former Give & Take employee, said she has a passion for organizing things. Her coworkers shared how her efforts to organize and elevate the Give & Take has blessed the school and community members.
Loefke graduated in hospitality and tourism management in December 2020. She was born in Kahuku and lived in multiple places on Oahu and in San Diego, Calif.
Leslie Harper, a sophomore from Canada majoring in supply chain and the manager of the BYUH Sustainability Center, said, “Kiaran is a very focused and driven person. She is very purposeful and doesn’t waste her time. She had a vision for the Give & Take and was able to execute it. She did a great job at staging our products and elevated the Give & Take to a professional level.” ....
