Big Island Man Sentenced To 5 Years For Crash That Killed Mom of 4

Interactive Memorial Day Experience Instead of Lantern Floating Festival

Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii Every year on Memorial Day, thousands of people would gather at Ala Moana Beach Park to participate in the lantern floating ceremony a Japanese Buddhist tradition to remember loved ones. Because of the pandemic, last year’s and this year’s lantern floating will look a bit different to follow social distancing requirements. Credit Shinnyo-en Hawaii Rather than sending off thousands of small, individually purchased water lanterns, there will be a singular 12-foot tall lantern decorated at Shinnyo-en Hawaiʻi. The lantern will feature the silhouette of a Kukui tree, which symbolizes light, hope and renewal.

CloudSpeak: What Clouds Are Saying

Credit Noe Tanigawa Clouds are my favorite thing to talk about, says Alison Nugent. Really, they re so beautiful. And so informative. Nugent teaches atmospheric sciences (weather) at UH Manoa.  She says clouds come in two categories, stratiform and convective. In the Hawaiian Islands, we usually have convective, which means in buoyant circulation, or in motion. When I think about convective clouds I move my fingers in these little circles like cauliflower or like boiling water in a pot. Convective clouds have a lot of moving circulation of air. Stratiform means layered. Stratiform clouds are pretty flat and usually pretty ugly.

Hawaiʻi Has Lost a Master Navigator: Chad Kālepa Baybayan

Hawaiʻi s Community of Navigators and Voyagers Mourn the Loss of Chad Kālepa Baybayan The passing of Hawaiian master navigator Chad Kālepa Baybayan came as a shock to many, including fellow Hōkūleʻa crew member and master navigator Nainoa Thompson.  “Itʻs not that you donʻt believe it. You donʻt want to believe it,” says Thompson, “And the only way I dealt with this was to come down here, next to the canoe. I believe a part of him will always be here.” Baybayan was born in Lahaina, Maui, and first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 1975. He was aboard all of Hōkūleʻa’s major voyages, and became mentor to future seafarers. Kaimanaonalani Barcarse  was one of them praising Baybayan for his ability to bring out the best in everyone.

Isolated Economy Presents Challenges, Opportunities For Diversification

9:16 Steven Bond-Smith, senior research fellow at the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre in Western Australia and incoming assistant professor at U-HERO In a brief comparing these economies from the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization, Steven Bond-Smith says the economies are relatively small scale, but still integrated as part of a globalized trade system. These economies, in order to compete, in order to be highly productive, they need to have a large-scale industry, Bond-Smith said. In Hawaii, the primary industry is tourism; in New Zealand, it s food and agriculture; and in Western Australia, it s iron ore. However, external shocks - such as a drop in the price of iron ore and dairy, and fewer visitor arrivals - have led to recessions.
