Troubled John Bisseker Secondary School in East London is getting much-needed repairs after a prolonged strike, but it is in for a much bigger headache.
A John Bisseker Secondary School pupil was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after being stabbed in the hand, allegedly by a classmate. The incident involved two grade 10 schoolboys. According to a pupil, the fight started before school when one boy bumped into another one cleaning his shoes. The second boy allegedly reprimanded him.
The lights came back on across large parts of East London at just after 2pm on Tuesday after an unprecedented 40-hour-long power outage that crippled industry, left residents in the dark, and cost untold amounts in lost revenue, production and spoilt food. But minutes after the power was restored, some residents complained it went off immediately, apparently due a combination of scheduled load-shedding and other unscheduled faults.
Classes came to a standstill at an East London high school on Monday, as pupils, teachers, parents and school governing body members staged a protest outside the premises.
The parents of John Bisseker Secondary School in Parkside have closed the school because of a shortage of teachers and massive overcrowding. One teacher has to teach up to 60 pupils in one class. The school has 1,428 pupils. Grade 8 and 9 pupils have not had teachers since the beginning of the 2021 academic year.
