Female employment: ET Explainer: While employment rose, fewer high-paying jobs for women

Between April and October 2023, the share of women in low-paying formal employment reached a seven-year high at 20.8%, compared to 19.1% in the previous year. While women s labor force participation increased, their enrollment in high-paying formal jobs declined. Unemployment rates for urban women decreased below 9%, and overall formal employment numbers indicate a rise in women s employment. However, the surge in low-paying job enrollments raises concerns about the gender pay gap.
