Transcripts For CSPAN George Floyds Family Speaks After Meeting With Sen. Scott Sen. Graham 20240710

Good to see you. Just real brief. Just real quick. One or two questions. This is your first meeting with a republican on this issue. Do you walk away from this meeting feeling more confident they are going to find a compromise . We are we are optimistic. Both senator scott and senator graham talk to the families for over an hour. Talking about how they are making progress. How both sides of the aisle are at the table and they are trying to define specific terms because they feel that they are close. The closest they have ever been. We want to encourage them in the spirit of this day, thats why the family wanted to come and say, lets have a legacy that respects not only their brothers blood on that legislation, but Breonna Taylor and all the others who have been taken away unjustifiably. So thats what the senators talked about. Thats what the speaker thats what the president , everybody talked about. We have to make sure we dont squander this opportunity. Everybodys engaged in saying we

A bit ago he said he thinks that everybody thats involved wants to get to a yes. He thinks this is doable. And he thinks that everybody is negotiating in good faith. So, again, more optimism from a republican there that thinks this can get potentially over the finish line. I also just spoke with congresswoman karen bass, who had been talking with the president of the naacp. Of course, a very vested outside group in the outcome of this bill. You know, some progressives in the house have said they dont want things like qualified immunity, one of the biggest sticking points. I asked congresswoman bass what shes saying to these more progressive groups that say they dont want to compromise. Her attitude is shes been fighting for this, she told me, for years and years and years, and she really believes this will be substantive reform, this will make a difference and she has made a commitment to progressives and others that the second President Biden signs a new bill, shes going to get right

So that exact moment. Do you have a sense of what that will look and feel like surrounding the courthouse and on the streets . Reporter absolutely. So when the jury starts their deliberation, they will be sequestered, so they will be cut off essentially from the outside world. The way that process works is that you have the deliberation in their private room, they can send questions to the judge, questions about process, questions about evidence, questions about the law and we are hearing that we will get an update, an advanced warning whenever those questions come in, so we can televise what the jury is asking. Of course, we wont see their faces. Once with eget to the moment where they have actually rendered a verdict and the judge is prepared to announce that we expect to get one to two hours notice. Then that will be televised. We will see the moment when that is read is court. We will obviously get the reaction from the defendants, Derek Chauvin. The world will be watching as well,

Floyd being led away in handcuffs. This is accountability, but many say it still falls short of justice. On thursday i spoke with Black Minneapolis residents about what it has been like over the last year living in the shadow of this Police Murder and what the verdict means to them. Thank you. I want to play for you some of the conversation that i had with some of those residents when i did ask them what was going through their mind when they witnessed that conviction. All right. I will bring it to you in just a moment. On thursday, just two days after the chauvin conviction, i did sit down with people in minneapolis. George floyds family attended the family of Daunte Wright that day. Daunte wright, as you know, is the 20yearold unarmed black man shot and killed by a Police Officer in brooklyn center, minnesota, last week. It is just a short distance from where the Chauvin Trial was taking place. The Reverend Al Sharpton once again delivered the eulogy, another eulogy at another funera
