Reporter this shows a really big moment for a lot of reasons. Laphonza butler is taking the seat held, as you know, by the late senator dianne feinstein, who had that seat for more than 30 years. Vice president former california senator Kamala Harris swore her in this afternoon. She will serve until feinstein s term expires in 2024. Laphonza butler is now the third black female senator in history, behind Vice President harris and the first openly lesbian senator as well. A former union leader and has advised both Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. She is the head of emilys list, which raises money for female candidates who support abortion rights.
