UChicago Medicine's ED maintains HIV screening despite pandemic interruptions

E-Mail While other medical systems across the country failed to maintain HIV screening volumes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Chicago Medicine maintained screening volumes by including universal HIV screening alongside COVID-19 testing in its busy emergency department, according to a new report published April 12 in JAMA Internal Medicine. Through targeted efforts to maintain infrastructure and enthusiasm for HIV screening, the number of HIV tests remained at pre-pandemic levels while the rate of acute HIV diagnoses actually increased. Widespread screening to diagnose individuals newly infected with HIV is a key part of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC) plan to end the HIV epidemic in America. However, the COVID-19 pandemic presented a challenge, because changes to the logistics of running emergency departments during a pandemic led to reduced HIV screening across the country.

Jessica Schmitt enjoys skating several times a week with her 10-year-old daughter, Lucy. “The oval at Soldiers Field is well maintained and very atmospheric, especially at night with the Christmas lights,” she said. “For nighttime skating, we recently learned how to turn on the huge overhead lights, too, so that makes it feel safe. Ultimately, you really can’t beat the views of the city from Soldiers Field!”

Animal Ag Alliance - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

Animal Ag Alliance College Aggies Online is an initiative of the Animal Agriculture Alliance that connects college students from across the country who are interested in promoting agriculture. In the individual division, participants receive training from industry experts and social media-savvy farmers to engage on social media about current and emerging issues facing farmers and ranchers and telling personal stories. The club division, which is typically focused on reaching campus peers in-person, was updated to include virtual engagement opportunities such as hosting virtual farm tours, food drives, and more. “This year we had more than 275 individuals and 16 collegiate clubs enroll in the competition, representing 87 colleges and 39 states,” said Casey Kinler, Alliance director of membership and marketing. “Given the virtual nature of the pandemic, the competition was held almost solely online. Students posts reached 879,000 people on Facebook and Twitter throu
