Imagine trying to find a single match from a book of matches in a large room. Not an easy task, right? But if the lights were dimmed and the match was lit, then its location would be immediately apparent.
This is the basic idea behind PSMA imaging, a newly approved method for detecting prostate cancer that is spreading, or metastasizing. The method relies on a minimally radioactive tracer called gallium-68 PSMA-11. Delivered in tiny amounts by injection, the tracer travels throughout the body and gloms onto a protein called PSMA that is found at high levels on prostate cancer cell surfaces. The labeled cells will then light up on whole-body imaging with a positron-emission tomography (PET) scan. ....

FDA makes history with approval of Ga-68 PSMA-11 PET

December 18, 2020 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration s (FDA) recent approval of a PET radiotracer that targets lesions positive for prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is not only a quantum leap for the diagnosis of prostate cancer in men but also sets a precedent for academic research.
The FDA granted approval to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for the use of gallium-68 (Ga-68) PSMA-11 PET for prostate cancer patients with suspected metastases, as well as in patients with suspected recurrence based on elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.
The agency s action also marks a unique approach to simultaneous new drug application (NDA) approvals and opens the door for wider clinical use of the cancer imaging technique. ....

Dr. Jeremie Calais, assistant professor of nuclear medicine and theranostics in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is one of 26 researchers to be named a 2020 Young Investigator by the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
In recognition of innovative prostate cancer research, the Young Investigator Award is given to the next generation of cancer researchers who are committed to advancing the prostate cancer field.
Calais, who is trained in nuclear medicine and cancer imaging, was awarded the Larry Ruvo-PCF Young Investigator Award and $225,000 to help support his work investigating a PET imaging tracer that targets the fibroblast activation protein, or FAP, expressed on fibroblasts within the tumor stroma or on cancer-associated fibroblasts.
