New data has laid bare clusters of social housing across Christchurch. While some suburbs have no social housing, Aranui has 469 state-owned homes. In the second of three investigations, STEVEN WALTON talks to residents and decision-makers about where social housing is built and why.
Zhane Neho, a mother to two daughters aged 3 and 5, says Aranui can be a harsh place to live.
A lot of “random stuff” happens.
“You can hear yelling out on the street,” she says.
“Or one time we’ve had gunshots out here and, you know, I was in the kitchen cooking.” ....

Shutting Christchurch pool where champions have trained 'shortsighted'

Suzi de Gouveia, principal of St Teresa s School, said the decision was “shortsighted”.
The school is 1.1km from the pool, meaning students and staff can attend swimming lessons without transport costs.

“It’s a great resource. We can walk there and students can have lessons there and become safer in the water,” she said.
“We are backing the campaign and encouraging our parents to do so.”
She said it may not be possible for them to travel to Parakiore when it opens.
“If you have to add transport costs, schools have limited budgets. I don’t know what we will do.” ....
