(Jan. 15, 2021) This week, 80 years ago, units of the French Navy achieved a victory over the Royal Thai Navy during the brief war between the two countries. That war erupted on Jan. 5, 1941 when the Royal Thai Bruapha and Isan Armies launched an offensive against the French colonies of Laos and Cambodia. The reason was because France, in 1904, had forced Siam to transfer land along the Mekong River to Laos, and in 1907 had forced Siam to transfer three provinces to Cambodia. This occurred during the reign of King Rama V, also known as Chulalongkorn. These areas had been a part of the Kingdom of Siam for the previous century.
