MONTPELIER â The hot seat at the Vermont Department of Labor got hotter on Wednesday, as Gov. Phil Scott appointed one of his top advisers as a deputy to Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington and a task force to address the problem.
Meanwhile, state House and Senate lawmakers sought more complete information from Harrington about what they should tell constituents concerned about the risk of identity theft as the result of corrupted tax forms sent to thousands of unemployment claimants. ....

Montpelier, Vt. - Governor Phil Scott today took additional actions to address and correct the tax form errors announced by the Vermont Department of Labor (VDOL) on Monday.
Specifically, the Governor has dispatched two senior-level tactical response teams to VDOL to expedite the response to the 1099-G tax form errors; asked State Auditor Doug Hoffer to conduct a performance audit to identify the root cause of the error and provide recommendations for long-term quality control improvements; and he has appointed a new deputy commissioner to help lead the department. ....

MONTPELIER â Officials from Phil Scottâs administration sought to assure lawmakers Thursday that the governorâs proposed realignment of Act 250 governance would add more professional know-how to the increasingly complex enforcement of the land planning law without compromising local input.
But some legislators from the House and Senate Natural Resources committees, and some witnesses testifying at Thursdayâs hearing, were more skeptical about the proposed change, and the wide-ranging implications it has for land use policy in Vermont.
Another complicating factor arose: Whether the statute that allows Scott to propose the changes by executive order, and the Legislature to decline it with a no vote either the House or Senate, violates the Vermont Constitution. ....
