Widespread internet outage affects Maine, N.H.

CONWAY â Thousands of Spectrum customers in Maine and New Hampshire went without internet, phone services and video for several hours on Monday night due to fiber breaks.
The outage began around 5:30 p.m. with loss of services to customers in Maine and New Hampshire due to two fiber cuts, said Heidi Vandenbrouck, senior communications manager for the broadband service provider.
Our focus was on restoring service to our customers as quickly as possible. Customers had services restored around 8 p.m.
One of the service cuts was apparently caused by a fire. All Spectrum customers in Maine were affected by the outage. Spectrum has over 440,000 residential and business customers in Maine. Parts of New Hampshire, including Conway, were also affected. ....

Woman admits to lighting house fire

A MUM of six has pleaded guilty to deliberately lighting a fire that destroyed a Lowood house.
The woman, 32-year-old Nakita Amy McGee, appeared before Ipswich District Court on Wednesday and made a formal plea of guilty to wilfully and unlawfully setting fire to a building at Honeyeater Place at Lowood on Thursday, May 10, 2018.
Dressed in a bright red dress, McGee simply said guilty Your Honour , when asked how she pleaded.
McGee was convicted of the arson then sat quietly in the dock for the remainder of what was a brief court appearance.

For seven years, Melanie was locked in a room with no natural light, often for more than 23 hours a day.
On the walls, she was said to have “graffitied the room with her own blood” and two advocates who visited her and saw the conditions she was kept in say the experience will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
“I have had a bad upbringing,” Melanie, 39, told the disability royal commission in a prerecorded statement, “but I’m a strong, proud, black Aboriginal woman that is here before you today to come and get help where I need it and fight for my rights.” ....
