2020 Year in Review — the year in quotes

Quote of the Week

“I don’t think anybody who runs for mayor in America, thinks, ‘You know, do two terms, and then it’s right to the White House. At least not in the city like mine.” — Democratic presidential candidate Peter Buttigieg during an editorial board at The Conway Daily Sun on Jan. 3.

New Year's Eve fireworks tonight in North Conway

CONWAY — With the forecast calling for clear skies Thursday evening, the stage is set for saying goodbye (and good riddance!) to 2020 and hello to hopefully better times in 2021 as Community Celebrations presents its annual New Year’s Eve fireworks in North Conway’s Schouler Park at 9:30 p.m.
“I received lots of calls from people yesterday and they’re all pretty excited about the fireworks,” said John Eastman, director of the town of Conway’s Parks and Recreation Department, who annually oversees the fireworks display which is presented by Atlas Fireworks.
“We expect the fireworks to last about 15 minutes. We ask people to wear masks and maintain safe social distancing,” said Eastman. ....

Little flooding, but rain depletes snow for skiers

CONWAY — The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day storm brought heavy rain and some flooding of local streams and rivers and caused snowpack cover to melt prior to the start of vacation week, but the storm did not drop as much precipitation as forecasted.
“We got 1.34 inches here at the station but they had predicted more than 2 inches. That combined with there being less snow on the ground made it less impactful than predicted,” said Conway Village Fire Chief Steve Solomon Monday, as a light snow fell.
Local U.S. cooperative weather observer Ed Bergeron reported 1.69 inches on Christmas Eve and another .9 inches on Christmas Day for a total of 2.59 inches at his West Side Road North Conway weather station. ....

1:40
Board Chairman Carl LeBuhn said the public commentary during the meeting was to allow for more time for people to express themselves about the photo, following group and individual meetings Shively had with students, parents and faculty. More than a dozen people spoke to the board including some who said they were members of the NAACP. The Paducah-McCracken County NAACP chapter previously called for Shively’s resignation, with community members staging a protest at Paducah Tilghman High School calling for his resignation.

Martha Emmons, co-owner of a local bike shop, asked the board how the board plans to repair broken student and community trust if Shively remains superintendent. She also asked what consequences other district staff could face in the future following this situation. ....
