The Hawk Eye At the corner of Sixth and Jefferson streets, the statue celebrating Nancy Neafie watches over historical downtown Burlington. The bronze statue stands 7 feet tall, wearing an Oriental-style scholar s robe, its left hand holding a book as if saluting the knowledge contained on its pages a fitting tribute to the scholar and teacher who served as Burlington s first and only female mayor. She was a very empowered female, Sarah Hazell said from the office of Hazell Agencies-Insurance, where she works alongside several family members, including her father, Scott Hazell, and niece, Laura Hazell. I wouldn t say strong, I would say empowered, because to me, empowerment embodies strength, too, and knowledge, and she definitely represented both of those things.
