Members of Steubenville City Council made a wise decision when they approved a two-year contract extension for City Manager James Mavromatis.
Mavromatis, who has been on the job for five years, has brought a no-nonsense style of management to the post, and his leadership has helped the city navigate several difficult issues.
As he told members of the Steubenville Rotary Club last month, those challenges included having to deal with lawsuits and consent decrees from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, a bomb scare at the former Macy’s department store in the Fort Steuben Mall and an outage that led to most of the downtown being left without water for several days. ....

STEUBENVILLE Members of City Council never had the opportunity to thank former Mayor Domenick Mucci Jr. for his service to the community when he stepped down from the post three years ago.
They made up for that during Tuesday’s meeting, offering a resolution recognizing him for the 36 years he spent in city government and his other work in the community.
“It has taken us three years to do this,” said 5th Ward Councilman Willie Paul while making the presentation. ....
