King spoke here on may 8 in 1966 on a rainy sunday afternoon, as you will see, it was his first major public appearance in South Carolina. He only made three speeches in the state of South Carolina. And if i am not mistaken, the other two locations were in charleston and orangeburg. But he came to king street first. And he came here after the passage of the Voting Rights act of 1965.
