constitutional right to abortion. and so he feels a direct connection to that. at the same time there are people on the political right who believe that the leak may have been done to try to provoke anger toward those conservatives. others believe in the conspiracy space of who is responsible to this without an answer, perhaps it was done by someone on the right to try to harden that position before the final outcome of the opinion was made public. so not having an answer from the court s investigation leaves open that space of not knowing why it happened, what the motivations were, and could it happen again? those are ongoing questions. on the matter of jailing reporters who legally published what was the draft document, that is something that the biden white house says cannot go without a response and so you heard that swift and really fulsome comment from the biden white house against the former president. kelly mentioned the
lawsuit against the trump campaign, the russian government and the wikileaks organization. it alleges a widespread conspiracy to help trump win the election. let s bring in melanie and kevin. with a good morning to you both, we ll go ladies first here with you, melanie. how big of a misstep was the this by republicans to force the doj to release these comey memos? well, you really have to wonder, is there a little bit of regret now two days later on behalf of the gop and some of trump s conservative allies. i think they thought these memos would reveal no evidence of collusion or at the very least take some of the headlines and coverage away from comey s book tour and media blitz. but these memos do not paint the president in a very attractive or favorable light whatsoever. in fact, a lot of the headlines have focused on some of the more salacious details, joking about jailing reporters, suggesting
has made people nervous. what are your thoughts on it? the rest of it should be disturbing to all of us. you have the president of the united states talking about charging and jailing some of the leaders of the fbi for example. he s talked publically about the leaders of the fbi and doj, people who he appointed by the way, at times people who he thinks should be thrown in prison. it s a dangerous thing. the only thing i can say to mitigate it is he told us this was coming. he talked about jailing hillary clinton in the election, during the election talked about prosecuting and jailing his political opponent. frankly, as i mentioned earlier, when he talked about jailing reporters, these are the tendencies of someone that are not consistent with democracy. it s not what our country is about. we don t throw law enforcement in jail when they re investigating you, we don t throw april opponents in jail.
