Ige's Appeals Court Nominee Faces Questions Over Experience, Diversity

Ige s Appeals Court Nominee Faces Questions Over Experience, Diversity - Honolulu Civil Beat State lawmakers will decide later this week on Dan Gluck’s nomination. Reading time: 5 minutes. Dan Gluck, the state Ethics Commission director and Gov. David Ige’s pick for a seat on the state’s Intermediate Court of Appeals, defended his nomination Tuesday even as some called for him to withdraw and criticized his lack of trial experience compared to women who applied for the vacancy. For many, Gluck’s nomination has become a symbol of the gender imbalance in Hawaii courts, where women make up far fewer than half of sitting judges. Ige chose Gluck from a list that included Native Hawaiian women, one of whom is a district court judge.

Honolulu Police Officers Want Charges Dismissed in Fatal Shooting of Iremamber Sykap

/ Three Honolulu police officers are asking a judge to dismiss charges against them in connection with a shooting that killed a 16-year-old Micronesian boy. Prosecutors pursuing charges against them after a grand jury declined to indict them “is statutorily and constitutionally impermissible,” said a motion to dismiss by Officer Zackary Ah Nee. Attorneys representing fellow Officers Geoffrey Thom and Christopher Fredeluces have joined in the motion filed Tuesday. The April 5 shooting killed Iremamber Sykap, who police said was driving a stolen car linked to an armed robbery, burglary, purse-snatching and car theft. Sykap led officers on a chase immediately before the shooting, police said.
