Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks, 24, died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast in what authorities described Monday as a tragic accident at a Michigan home on the Fourth of July.
I m still struggling with it , said Dennis Canfield, Kivlenieks’ former coach with the Forest Lake Lakers. It doesn t almost seem real.
Canfield coached the young Latvian goalie for the Forest Lake Lakers in the former Minnesota Junior Hockey League back in 2014.
Every time we showed up at the rink, we had an advantage, we had a guy that everybody knew was the best player in the rink,” Canfield said. “To have that guy, it s a mental advantage for sure, he won a lot of games for us. ....

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks, 24, died on the Fourth of July of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast in the Detroit suburb of Novi, Michigan.
According to the police department, Kivlenieks and others at a private party quickly tried to get out of a hot tub when fireworks were headed in their direction. Kivlenieks fell and hit his head. ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died Sunday night as the result of an accident, police confirmed.
According to the Novi Police Department, which is still investigating, Kivlenieks, 24, appeared to sustain a head injury while trying to escape a hot tub after a fireworks malfunction.
“From what we can tell, we’re treating this as an accidental fall,” Novi Police Lt. Jason Meier said. “There was a fireworks malfunction and several people were fleeing a hot tub, including Matiss. It appears he slipped and fell getting out of the hot tub and hit his head on the concrete. There’s still an autopsy scheduled for (Monday) and we’re still investigating, but right now it just looks like a tragic accident.” ....
