Self-driving tech still promising despite fatal Tesla crash in TX

Apr 23, 2021
Class 8 self-driving company TuSimple is taking its time with testing and why not? Nobody wants bad headlines particularly carriers, some of whom have been hit with record nuclear verdicts.

A Tesla crash on Saturday in Texas that claimed the lives of two men, one of them being a doctor, has stirred up legitimate concerns about self-driving technology.
These concerns, however, should be governed by facts which will continue to arise as investigations continue with Texas officials, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
What’s already come into question, according to the Houston Chronicle, is whether the 2019 Tesla Model S owned by 59-year-old Dr. William Varner was actually in self-driving mode when it ran off the road, crashed into a tree and caught fire killing Varner and his 69-year-old friend Everette Talbot in a gated community north of Houston. ....

Isuzu inks partnership for medium-duty driver automation

Apr 07, 2021
The two companies hope the collaboration will accelerate the commercialization of autonomous delivery fleets while contributing to a safer and more sustainable logistics community in the future.
Isuzu North America Corporation and B2B middle-mile logistics startup Gatik announced Tuesday a collaboration to develop and evaluate fully autonomous medium-duty trucks.
The effort – an industry first in the medium-duty segment – will integrate Gatik’s autonomous driving technology into several Isuzu medium-duty N-Series trucks to produce SAE Level 4 delivery vehicles with redundant systems. The first vehicles are expected to be deployed later this year. Considered “high automation,” Level 4 is the first autonomous driving level at which the vehicle itself can intervene in the event of a system failure and does not require human intervention in most circumstances. Humans still have the option to override functions manually. ....

Silicon Valley self-driving startup Gatik works with Isuzu to build delivery trucks

(Reuters) - Silicon Valley self-driving startup Gatik and Isuzu North America Corp on Tuesday said they will work together to build autonomous delivery trucks that Gatik will use to serve its retailer customers.
Gatik, which works with Walmart Inc in Arkansas and Louisiana and Loblaw Companies Ltd in Canada to deliver goods to stores from warehouses using autonomous trucks with safety drivers, has seen a boom in business as the pandemic has boosted sales at grocery stores.
“What I can share is our revenue is in the millions. So this is not a free service that we offer,” said co-founder and chief executive Gautam Narang. He said Gatik’s business model for now is to be a delivery service provider for retailers using self-driving technology rather than selling the technology to automakers. ....
