nonfiction books featured on c-span s book tv. and welcome to the about books podcast and program in this episode. we re going to introduce you to jeff deutsch. he has a new book out. it s called in praise of good bookstores, and he s a director of a bookstore co-op in chicago. but first let s start with this week s publishing news. well recently in congress. there was a hearing about challenged and banned books. the house subcommittee on civil rights and civil liberties heard from students parents librarians and teachers as well as author and civil rights activist ruby bridges. congressman jamie raskin a democrat of maryland is the chair of the subcommittee and here s part of his opening statement. many books are being targeted for censorship these days simply because they address racism or white supremacy as historical or sociological realities or address human sexuality or lgbtq issues because the protagonist or author is gay or a person of color or for some other al ....
things together. i mean, did you say, i m going to be a writer, and then all of a sudden you realized that your life was on the internet or.? no, i wrote off-line, in print, for about 12 years almost exclusively, and it s so funny. colson whitehead has this recent piece about writers who complain that twitter and blogging is going to destroy their writing. and it s actually a split that i never really understood much. i love print, and i like blogging and i like tweeting. you know, i like a lot of things. and so it never really struck me as being in contrast or even being a problem or, you know, it being two different worlds or anything like that. it s just writing. hinojosa: you re able to divide up your time so that you can blog at one part of the day and then write long form at another part? uh, i don t even think about it like that. it s very unconscious for me. hinojosa: tell me how you do it. well, i m not good at much else, so that s the first thing, ....
my name is justin desmangles i of the chair of the foundation celebrating the 41st year. [applause] for decades. i want to and extend my gratitude to an hour founder our founder who was one of the great artists, warriors of our time, ishmael reed is with us today. [applause] i also want to think our friends here the center for being so generous in in particular the director and to fellow board member presently the poet laureate at the center cisco jazz festival san francisco jazz festival. [applause] the american book awards are hosted by the jazz center. jazz has the uniquely american art form the american is a and the thread of telling it like it is to invite openly all cultures to develop and to seek peace with one another. and with that national conversation that is exacerbated by a violent political crisis that has taken hold of the country in the rest of the world and with the viciousness of the american book awards and the before columbus foundation is it ....
[applause] my name is justin desmangles. i am the chair of the before columbus foundation. about eight years ago i proceeded in that position, our founder, ishmael reed, we are very fortunate to have with us joining the program today. there were some very big shoes to fill. of course, i want to thank our friends at the san francisco jazz center who had been so generous in their support of the american book awards for the last several years. also our friend at c-span who continue to support the historical mission of the before columbus foundation and american book awards. i will say a few things about our direction that we embarked on recently. over the past several years we have expanded our programming to include a number of partnerships in the bay area and nationally, including those with the san francisco public library who i am very honored to say, one of the representatives, stuart shaw who has been instrumental facilitating the collaboration between the before c ....
