I ll burn you alive : Horror Hamilton Island allegations

News by KELMENY FRASER Premium Content   A former Hamilton Island worker claims she was bullied and harassed at work, while others allege they worked hours of overtime for no extra pay only to be ordered to leave the Island with just three days notice during the COVID-19 shutdown. The Courier-Mail first revealed in March that Staff claim they routinely racked up excessive unpaid overtime and worked through their breaks, but complaints to Island owner Hamilton Island Enterprises that they were being short changed were ignored for years. HIE has launched a pay review and begun back paying salaried staff on the Island - owned by the billionaire Oatley family - tens of thousands of dollars dating back to at least 2018 amid a Fair Work Ombudsman investigation, blaming complexities involving interpreting the nearly 40 awards applicable for the issues.

Ex-Hamilton Island staff: Work 110 hours, get paid for 70

One ex-employee, who asked not to be named as he remained in the industry, said the pay issues stretched back years, with staff working up to 20 hours unpaid overtime a week. He said in the worst example, he worked 110 hours in a week during the opening of a restaurant but was paid for about 70 hours. It was standard for staff to be rostered for a 45-hour week but actually work about 55 hours without any overtime pay, he claimed. Former staff have spoken to The Courier-Mail about their time working for Hamilton Island Enterprises - owned by the billion-dollar yacht racing Oatley family - after the newspaper revealed it was under investigation and in the midst of a Fair Work Commission pay case.
