You know, this is a country that has, you know, plenty of earthquake drills. we feel earthquakes out here all the time. nothing like we felt earlier today in a long time. were people heeding those evacuation warnings there in tokyo? did you see people exiting all those buildings in that densely populated area? reporter: you know, it s tough to see from our vantage point, but based on the images i ve seen, i can tell you, japanese people take their earthquakes very seriously because they get so many of them. they are looking into the warnings, they are making sure out on the coast at least, to seek higher ground and stay there until they hear otherwise. also people who were inside the buildings evacuating, doing exactly as they were told. i m sure that s definitely the situation in sendai, which we keep going back to because the images are so incredible. the economic fallout from this is going to be enormous. from what we know about this town, they produce a great deal of agricult ....
Thing could have a huge impact far beyond japan in that corner of the world. the pictures speak for themselves, taking a look at the airport. as you see the debris floating around the airport, completely consumed in water. people evacuated to the roofs there in order to get out of the way. all people in that area have been told to get to higher ground due to the tsunami. the quake struck at a depth of 6 miles, 80 miles off the eastern coast. it s about 240 miles northeast of tokyo. so, we re getting all different pictures there from all up and down along the coast. we ll continue to bring you the very latest here on world news now. we re going to take a quick break.
