“Aquabikes” caught the attention of former
Irish Times journalist Kevin Myers back in 1982.
The
Irishman’s Diary writer was seriously concerned about the pressure windsurfers were putting on the RNLIDun Laoghaire lifeboat at the time.
He had read about these “aquabikes”, made by a Japanese motorbike company, which “skid across the water, steered by handlebars”.
Although there might be “cacophonous” drawbacks, this vehicle might prove useful in rescuing windsurfers, he wrote - if it wasn’t engaged in knocking them down, or worse.
Almost 40 years later, and jetskis have proved their worth in rescue, with trained riders able to access areas of the coastline that may prove too dangerous for coast and cliff rescue crews, lifeboats or helicopters. ....

NEW Clare County Council byelaws would see the use of jetskis prohibited at White Strand in Miltown Malbay, White Strand in Doonbeg, at Ballycuggeran Lake in Killaloe and Ballyalla Lake in Ennis.
The move towards a ban is being criticised by Peter Conroy, the Miltown-based chairman of the Irish Tow Surf Rescue Club, who says it is regressive, and will limit the club’s ability to carry out the training it requires to provide rescue services. ....

Clare County Council is planning to restrict the use of fast power crafts on a number of beaches

Surfers and a club representing a surfing rescue group have appealed to councillors to oppose the introduction of planned new bye-laws that could prohibit the use of jet skis or fast power crafts on some of Co Clare s beaches.
Following an increase in beach rescues associated with children s inflatable toys and complaints regarding the improper use of jet skis, the local authority in Co Clare is planning to ban the use of inflatable toys, on water, at all beaches. ....
