Barking dog and that appears to be what alerted the hostages captors to what was going on. During the firefight that then followed, u. S. Forpdss saw a militant go into the shack where the hostages were being held. It is believed that is when he shot both of the hostages, both of them died as a result of those injuries, as u. S. Forces were transporting them away. U. S. Intelligence did not know the identity of the other hostage being held with somers. He has since been identified as South African teacher pierre korkie. A char that worked with korkie says he was due to be released today. all the air defenses are opening up all around me, at the moment. a massive shock-blast just coming through our windows. i m going to have to take cover. - the invasion and the toppling of saddam was really quite easy. the entire campaign did not take more than a month. - we see that coalition forces advanced from southern iraq near the kuwaiti border, and from there they moved through najaf, karbala, and kut, and now into baghdad. it s taken 22 days of war for the coalition to get this far. - i was privileged to command the 101st airborne division. we liberated the first major city, uh, in iraq, najaf. then karbala and hillah, then moved into baghdad. - the man who ruled here so brutally and absolutely for almost 25 years has vanished. - closer we got, the more they knew saddam was finished, and they were glad to show it. - the troops were very welcome. shiites and people who who hated saddam were joyful, running through the streets. you had the iconic image of the big statue
