It started, in my own work and praxis, in 1994, when the Slave Route was launched. At this momentous occasion, at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, I met Dr Doudou Diène, the conceptor of the Slave Route (SR) and Federico Mayor, the Director-General of UNESCO. I proposed the idea of a Coolie Route. That was well before the Aapravasi Ghat and Le Morne were listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, in 2006 and 2008, respectively.
