Rainfall Becomes Increasingly Variable as Climate Warms

Rainfall Becomes Increasingly Variable as Climate Warms

Classification of precipitation change regimes based on changes in the precipitation mean state and variability. Shading indicates the ratio of change in precipitation variability and mean precipitation.
Newswise Climate models predict that rainfall variability over wet regions globally will be greatly enhanced by global warming, causing wide swings between dry and wet conditions, according to a joint study by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Met Office, the UK s national meteorological service.
This study was published in
Science Advances on July 28
th 2021.
Rainfall plays an important part of our daily life. More leads to floods, less to drought. It has been realized decades earlier that global warming drives increased rainfall on average. How this increase is delivered in time matters enormously. A 2-3% increase of annual pr ....

Skillful prediction of summer rainfall in the Tibetan Plateau on multiyear time scales

Skillful near-term climate predictions of rainfall over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the Asian water tower, benefit billions of people. On the basis of the state-of-the-art decadal prediction models, we showed evidence that although the raw model outputs show low predicted ability for the summer Inner TP (ITP) rainfall due to low signal-to-noise ratios in models, we can produce realistic predictions by extracting the predictable signal from large ensemble predictions along with a postprocessing procedure of variance adjustment. The results indicate that the summer ITP rainfall is highly predictable on multiyear time scales. The predictability of ITP rainfall originates from the Silk Road pattern driven by sea surface temperature over the subpolar gyre region in North Atlantic. Real-time forecasts suggest that the ITP will become wetter, with 12.8% increase in rainfall during 2020–2027 relative to 1986–2005. Our results will help the water resources management in the surrounding region ....

ARS to Recover Waste Heat: New Method of Natural Gas Pre-cooling in LNG Plant

Chinese Academy of Sciences
Developing clean and low-carbon natural gas is a key point of the nation’s energy development strategy, and also an important measure to achieve “Carbon Neutral”. China’s natural gas reserves exceed 100 trillion cubic meters, while more than 70% of the reserves are unconventional dispersed sources (i.e. coal-bed methane, tight gas). By processing the unconventional dispersed natural gas sources, they are vented or burned directly which result in serious energy waste and environmental pollution.
It is of great social significance and economic benefit to develop skid-mounted Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants for the gathering and transportation of dispersed natural gas sources. Current skid-mounted LNG technology is focusing on main-cooling process, but paying less attention to the pre-cooling stage. And it is found that pre-cooling stage by adopting Compression Refrigeration System (CRS) even consumes more than 20% of the total power co ....

Current research on flexible electronics is paving the way for wireless sensors that can be worn on the body and collect a variety of medical data. But where do the data go? Without a similar flexible transmitting device, these sensors would require wired connections to transmit health data.
Huanyu Larry Cheng, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the Penn State College of Engineering, and two international teams of researchers are developing devices to explore the possibilities of wearable, flexible antennae. They published two papers in April in Nano-Micro Letters and ....

Fe-Based Catalysts Discovered In Light-Driven CO sub 2 /sub Hydrogenation To Value-Added Hydrocarbons

Fe-Based Catalysts Discovered In Light-Driven CO
2 Hydrogenation To Value-Added Hydrocarbons
Chinese researchers recently prepared a series of Fe-containing catalysts from MgFeAl Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet by thermal reduction with H2 at temperatures ranging from 300 °C to 700 °C. The new discovery is applied to the light-driven reduction of CO2 to value-added hydrocarbons for the first time.
This research, published online in Adv. Energy. Mater., was directed by Prof. ZHANG Tierui from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (TIPC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
Catalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added hydrocarbons is one of the most important chemical industrial processes in human society. In the pursuit of low-energy consumption of CO2 hydrogenation, solar-driven photothermal catalysis for the production of solar fuels has been attractive and popular in the past few years. ....
