Optogenetics Restore Sight of Blind Man

Thursday, 27 May, 2021 - 06:45 FILE - A woman receives an eye exam at the Care Harbor/LA free clinic in Los Angeles, September 27, 2012. Reuters Paris - London - Asharq Al-Awsat Thanks to an innovative technique that combines gene therapy and light stimulation, the vision of a completely blind 58-year-old man has been partially restored. The man, whose identity has not been revealed, lives in Brittany, France, and was treated in Paris. He was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa - which leads to the death of light-sensing cells on the surface of the retina - 40 years ago. According to BBC, this condition affects more than two million people worldwide, and although complete blindness is rare, the man has had no vision for the past two decades.

Gene therapy trial partially restores eyesight

Gene therapy trial partially restores eyesight The full potential of the new therapy to cure blindness has yet to be realised. Keystone / Binsar Bakkara A blind man has regained part of his sight after a new treatment genetically engineered his eye to produce light-sensitive algae proteins. This content was published on May 25, 2021 - 11:32 May 25, 2021 - 11:32 swissinfo.ch/mga The technique, known as optogenetics, was successfully trialled in France with input from the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB), which is affiliated with the University of Basel.   Cells in the man’s retina were programmed to produce a protein called ChrimsonR, which is sensitive to light. The protein is naturally produced by algae to help them detect light.
