First Responder Friday: Josephine Smith, daughter of FDNY firefighter killed on 9/11, first woman to follow in father s footsteps

She was the first daughter of a firefighter killed on 9/11 to become a firefighter herself.
Kevin Smith was with Hazmat housed with Squad 288. At her FDNY graduation in 2014, she said she lives by the motto: Make him proud.
She recently received her first citation. On New Year s Eve 2020, Josephine was working in L-16 on a job with fire coming out of every window 14 stories up.
Meteorologist Amy Freeze met Josephine at a charity stair climb. She s active with the Ray Pfeifer Foundation, Tunnel to Towers, and she has run the NYC Marathon!
First Responder Friday: Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon

Sheriff Toulon is originally from the Bronx.
He received his Master s degree in Business Administration and Doctorate in Educational Administration from Dowling College; an advanced certificate in Homeland Security Management from Long Island University, and he attended leadership courses at the JFK School of Government at Harvard University.
Toulon has had a long career in policing. He spent 22 years in the Corrections Department before being elected sheriff of Suffolk County in 2017.
The list of programs under his tenure is impressive.
Toulon is a two-time cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with Hodgkin s lymphoma in 1996 and with pancreatic cancer in 2003.
Kinga Mielnik joined the FDNY in 2003. Her sister Daina is also on the job.
They were both featured in the first female FDNY calendar for their strong physiques and fitness routines.
During the pandemic, Kinga caught coronavirus while on the job in Brooklyn and was hospitalized.
She recovered and is celebrating the holidays with her five boys!
They were treated to some fun from the First Responders Children Foundation toy giveaway this week.
