PAPUA NEW GUINEA INFLATION TO FALL Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/18/2000 - 00:00 PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (July 14, 2000 – Post-Courier) -The Bank of PNG expects inflation in the country to fall significantly by the end of this year as the Government s economic recovery program gains momentum. However, the current high interest rates are expected to continue for the earlier part of the second half of the year that is, until the Central Bank is satisfied that inflation is down and things have definitely improved. Bank of PNG Governor Wilson Kamit announced the plans to continue with the tight monetary policy when he released the first semi-annual monetary policy statement for the second half of the year. ....

Lands Minister Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu said this will happen when the legal battle between the state and former lessee, Nauru Phosphate Trust, is resolved. Ratu Naiqama said the government cancelled the lease after the Nauruans did not maintain, operate or renovate the historic hotel after taking it over and planning to redevelop it. ....

The delegation also includes Toyoaki Inouke (Secretary to Mr. Ito), Akio Miyajama (Director of Oceania Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Elichi Matsui (Assistant Director of Oceania Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs). ....
CANBERRA TO DECIDE FIJI S MINI SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES Submitted by admin on Thu, 09/27/2001 - 00:00 MELBOURNE, Australia (September 26, 2001 – Radio Australia) -Organizers of this December s Mini South Pacific Games on Norfolk Island are hoping to find out this week whether Fiji will attend the event. Norfolk Island is administered by Australia, which is yet to repeal a series of sanctions imposed on Fiji following last year s coup. Tom Lloyd of the Mini South Pacific Games Organizing Committee says Fiji has entered 121 athletes, but says their attendance will ultimately be decided by Australia s Department of Foreign Affairs. Our government here has written to foreign affairs asking them to give us a waiver to allow the Fijian athletes to come, Mr. Lloyd said. Our latest information was that the sports bans were still in place, but that we had the option as the organizers of the event to appeal direct to the Minister for a waiver of that. ....
