CCE Welcomes Grace Liang-Franco as New Division Operations Officer
In February, the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) welcomed Grace Liang-Franco as its new division operations officer (DOO). She is charged with overseeing operations, logistics, finance, infrastructure, compliance, and other crucial administrative functions of the division.
Liang-Franco, who comes to Caltech from the USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute, served as its senior research administrative director since 2013, running all business, administrative, research, IT, and clinical operations. She previously worked at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and was with the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) for more than 17 years during which it moved from UCLA to USC. ....

$23.3M grant awarded to international chemical safety project involving IU researchers
A project involving Indiana University researchers was awarded $23.3 million from the European Commission to shape chemical safety regulation without the use of animal testing.
IU is part of a consortium of European and U.S. organizations called PrecisionTox, led by the University of Birmingham in the U.K., that received the award. PrecisionTox, short for precision toxicology, aims to protect human health from the toxic effects of chemicals found in people’s homes, food and the environment.

Workforce Development Team Aids in COVID-19 Vaccine Trials

Rutgers has been instrumental in getting the coronavirus vaccines to the public – most recently leading one of the largest phase 3 clinical trials sites in the world for the newly approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is expected to play a pivotal role in stemming the pandemic.
Behind the university’s crucial efforts at New Jersey Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson Medical school is a Rutgers-led collaborative established two years ago to create clinical trial innovations that can speed the translation of research discoveries into improved patient care.
“Who could have imagined this would be needed so quickly?” said Barbara Tafuto, instructor in the health informatics department at the Rutgers University School of Health Professions and member of workforce development for the NJ Alliance for Clinical and Translational Science’s $29 million grant program known as NJACTS. ....
