The Indian Army is fortifying its forces along the northern borders with China by transforming the Uttar Bharat Area into a fully operational corps. This move aims to enhance security along the Line of Actual Control. The new corps, tentatively named the 18 Corps, will bridge the gap between the 14 Corps in Ladakh and the 33 Corps in West Bengal.
Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said the situation at the LAC in eastern Ladakh remains “very fragile” and “quite dangerous” in terms of military assessment. He had earlier called it “unstable” or “abnormal.”
The announcement of the disengagement of troops came around a week ahead of the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Uzbekistan which is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping among other leaders of the grouping.
