Coimbatore charitable trust extends helping hand to girl suffering from diabetes | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Idhayangal Charitable Trust has given the latest insulin cartridges, pens, glucometer strips and a refrigerator (to store the cartridges) to a 12-year-old girl who suffers from type 1 diabetes and was recently admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in diabetic coma.
The child’s free insulin vials, given by the government, were losing potency because of not being refrigerated, because her family has no electricity connection.
Ramya, whose parents are daily wage labourers, had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child. While she had been hospitalized several times earlier, the recent admission was with a life-threatening condition because her body began going into ketoacidosis which led to a diabetic coma. ....

COIMBATORE: As many as 36 children from poor background with type 1 diabetes being treated in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital will soon receive the latest type of insulin replacement therapy.
City-based Idhayangal Charitable Trust (www.idhayangal.org) has decided to launch a special programme called ‘Kovai Thulir’, under which each of these 36 children will be given a refrigerator each to store insulin, a glucometer with 25 strips every month and an insulin pen or pump, where the needle is much finer than a normal injection needle, free of cost. ....

Started in 2017, city-based Idhayangal Charitable Trust supports 200 children with Type 1 diabetes across the state
COIMBATORE: City-based Idhayangal Charitable Trust, which has been providing free insulin to poor children with Type 1 diabetes, is now raising funds to buy insulin pumps.
There are 1,500 children with type 1 diabetes in Coimbatore districts alone, of whom 80% can’t afford even basic insulin, said consultant endocrinologist at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital and founding trustee of the trust Dr Krishnan Swaminathan. “An insulin pump is like an artificial pancreas that produces a basal dose of insulin in small doses throughout the day. With a small press on the device, a child can increase dose before or after meals or reduce it before exercise.” ....
