COIMBATORE: A 70-year-old woman was rushed to the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH)’s emergency department with a massive heart attack and low blood pressure, recently. She was found to have a massive rupture of the heart muscle in her left ventricle, which is a rare complication of heart attack.
While the usual procedure to close big holes is an open heart surgery, the hospital didn’t go for it. Instead, it used a 40mm atrial septal defect (ASD) device to close the hole. While using devices to close holes in upper chambers of the heart is common, using a 40mm device is rare.
