Pakistan's cabinet approves bills to protect journalists


Islamabad: Pakistan’s cabinet has approved two long-awaited bills for the protection of journalists and media professionals and criminalising the forced disappearances in the country.
Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari confirmed the approval. The Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Bill and the Forced or Involuntary Disappearance (Criminal Law Amendment) Bill would now be tabled before the National Assembly during its next session.
The minister thanked Prime Minister Imran Khan for support and approval of the bills, saying “the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) delivers on commitments”.
Welcoming the development, the Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Androulla Kaminara said the two bills are important as these are “also referred to in the GSP+ obligations of Pakistan”. She hoped for the swift and smooth parliamentary process which is important for the prompt adoption of the bills. ....

Begum Samina Alvi, the wife of the President of Pakistan, has said that nationwide registration of differently-abled people was crucial to ensure their access to facilities provided by the government, particularly in education and health.
“The registration will help categorisation of differently-abled persons and ensure facilities for them as per their needs,” she said on Wednesday in her virtual address at a Policy Roundtable.
The theme was ‘Mainstreaming Interventions to address Disabilities’ in the National Youth Priority Action Agenda (NYPA). Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari, parliamentarians, experts on disability, World Health Organization (WHO) representatives and officials of the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives participated via video-link. ....

First Lady terms registration crucial for access to health, education

Islamabad : A system of nationwide registration of differently-abled people was crucial to ensure their access to the facilities provided by the government, particularly in the areas of education and health, said Begum Samina Alvi, the wife of President Arif Alvi on Wednesday.
The registration will help categorisation of differently-abled persons and ensure them facilities as per their disability and individual needs, she said in her address at virtual Policy Roundtable themed Mainstreaming Interventions to address Disabilities in the National Youth Priority Action Agenda (NYPA).
