good afternoon, i m frank mallicoat. i m michelle griego. developing news, a horrific scene in san francisco s lower pacific heights neighborhood this morning. two cars smashed so badly you can hardly tell them apart as a result of a high-speed crash. the collision sounded like an explosion, according to witnesses, this morning. fire and police investigators have been on the scene all morning long. the wreckage made of mostly scattered car parts. our cate caugiran has been following the story. cate, we hear it s one of the worst accidents police have ever seen. reporter: yes, frank. that s exactly what chief greg suhr toll us when we asked him about this accident. you can see the cars are still here. right now a mother is fighting for her life. she was inside what s left of this minivan. you can t even tell where the minivan begins or ends because the two cars are entangled into each other following this morning s crash. witnesses say the crash sounded like an explosion.

the driver was taken to the er for observation but released into police custody. she s been questioned most of the afternoon. the police have 48 hours to charge her. they need to determine if the there was criminal intent. mechanical failure or horrible accident. the 15-year-old boy has been identified a couple came by to bring flowers just now. people have been leaving condolences on ktvu.com. the family of mia mcdonald said she died last night. she s been in intensive care since monday. she was hit as she ran into the street chasing a ball. the driver has been cooperative and there s no evidence that speed or alcohol was involved. no charges have been filed. this afternoon we learned a third person has died after a fire on 18th avenue in san francisco. the victims are a 33-year-old father, 2 1/2-year-old daughter and grandfather. the reason it took so long to get into the house. this morning howard simon lay flowers on step of his neighbor s homes. very thick smokeo
