Bolles discontinues part of racial literacy curriculum citing 'angst'


Just months after responding to public accusations about systemic racism on campus, The Bolles School is discontinuing part of its racial literacy curriculum citing angst from the community. Now, parents are asking why. 
On Tuesday, the school s Board of Trustees chairman and the head of school sent a joint letter to families explaining the decision. 
After careful consideration, we decided not to move forward with [the curriculum] and will explore other diversity initiatives and resources that we believe will strengthen Bolles and ensure that the School is a welcoming and supportive community for everyone, the note said. Any diversity initiatives will be age/grade level appropriate and grounded in the experiences of our own community members. ....

Jacksonville students reflect on new president and VP


Across Jacksonville, students experienced President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris  inauguration in different ways.
Some filled out prompts to reflect on how they feel. Others, like Larry Yudin s Mandarin High School students, called into C-SPAN (only to hit a wall of busy signals). 
We asked Duval County students to reflect on the new and outgoing presidential administrations. For many, a common theme was hope. 
Growing up, wanting to go into politics, I was taught politics was only meant for old white men, Rodney Wells, a senior at Bishop Kenny High School, said. So to see a Black woman be sworn in as Vice President of of the United States, it gives me hope that what once was considered an anomaly is becoming a reality. Representation is not everything, but it most certainly matters.   ....
