the state of our politics at this moment. even though some republican leaders have condemned the attack, news has been flooded with a what about and conspiracy theories and disinformation from a whole host of right-winged media figures. all of this happening while he s still in intensive care. and while an active investigation is underway, a little more than an hour ago, federal prosecutors filed two charges, attempting to challenge a federal official. federal officials allege the attacker broke into the home intending to kidnap and hurt speaker pelosi and he came armed with a hammer and brought a rope, white tape, and zip ties. he told paul pelosi, he wanted to speaker to, quote, tell the truth. political reports that the attacker had, quote, inhabited a vifd and resentment-fueled world of conspiracy while living a fringed existence, even by the standards of the san francisco bay area, that he appears to embrace falsehoods about the without outcome of the 2020 election. the
good morning, everyone, i m bianna golodryga. and it is very busy friday in washington. right now we re standing by as a federal judge sentencing former top trump adviser steve bannon. he was convicted this year on two counts of contempt of congress. all of this stemming from his refusal to testify before the january 6 select committee. plus we re on scene watch. the committee could request an appearance from trump. and he has hired a new lawyer to handle a suspected subpoena from the committee. and let s begin with the steve bannon sentencing. cnn correspondent sara murray is outside of the u.s. district court in washington, d.c. the judge this morning said bannon has expressed no remorse for his actions. walk us through how all of this is expected to play out today. reporter: well, sure, bianna. they re getting through the housekeeping items they have to get through before the judge hands down a sentence. what bannon s team was hoping for that he would get probation,
refusal to testify before the january 6th select committee and his failure to turn over documents. let s begin this morning outside the u.s. district court in washington, d.c. cnn political correspondent sara murray is there. how is all of this expected to play out today? reporter: well, you know, look, steve bannon is here in court, we expect this could take a couple of hours. what we know is that steve bannon is trying to get out of any kind of jail time. he was convicted on two counts for refusing to show up for a subpoena to testify before congress and refusing to hand over documents. the government has asked that he spend six months behind bars and they said he should pay a $200,000 fine. now, bannon s team has said, look, at the most he should get probation, he listened to his attorneys advice and if you are going to put him behind bars it should be house arrest only. they are also saying bannon plans to appeal his conviction and they re saying that any punishment he
