10 underrated and overlooked movies on the new Paramount+ streaming service

Behind the Music.
As far as movies are concerned, Paramount+ is more of a hit or miss affair. (It also doesn t appear to have a list or queue feature, which seems like a bizarre oversight.) But in between the throwaway titles and a handful of bona fide classics (the
Godfather trilogy, the
Indiana Jones series) are some buried treasures, movies I admire and that more people should know about.
I scoured the library of more than 700 films and feature-length specials and unearthed some of my favorite hidden gems and underrated classics. Here are 10 of them.
Better Luck Tomorrow (2002)
Before he became a go-to blockbuster director, Justin Lin helmed this weird, stylish thriller about a group of Asian-American high schoolers who front as model students while running a successful crime ring on the side. Although somewhat controversial at the time of its release, it s mostly been forgotten and is worth a look as a stereotype-busting bit of genre filmmaking. F ....

Must-See Movies From The 2021 Sundance Film Festival

“Passing”
The versatility that Rebecca Hall has shown in front of the camera extends to her directorial debut, a mannered but enchanting study in appearances literal and symbolic. Adapted from Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel, “Passing” follows childhood friends whose unexpected reunion proves to be a mixed blessing. One (Tessa Thompson) resides in Harlem, where she is happily married to a doctor (André Holland); the other (Ruth Negga, showcasing a wide-eyed glamour befitting the silent-film era) is wed to a wealthy racist (Alexander Skarsgård) and presents as white. With time, their divergent identities coalesce and clash.
Hall captures “Passing” in creamy black and white, heightening the story’s emotions while miniaturizing its grandest implications. The film can feel a bit measured, but that only barely detracts from its loveliness.  ....

It makes perfect sense that there’s now a documentary about the long-running children’s television series “Sesame Street.” After all, there’s already been a doc about the puppeteer who played the characters of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on that show (“I Am Big Bird: The Carroll Spinney Story”), and one about the man who played Elmo (“Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey”) while “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” Morgan Neville’s 2018 film about another children’s TV icon, Mister Rogers, recently became the 12th highest-grossing nonfiction film of all time. ....
