　　在新冠病毒大流行之前的2019年，全球约有40.9万人死于疟疾。据世界卫生组织统计，全球近一半人口正面临疟疾风险。疟疾也曾是中国发病人数最多的传染病。1940年代，中国每年新发疟疾病人有3000万，1950年代的调研显示，当时有疟疾流行的县(市)达1829个，约占全国县(市)总数的70%~80%。
　　当时主要有4种类型的疟疾流行。分布最广的间日疟以发冷发热交替、周期性发病的症状为特色，因此也被称为“打摆子”。恶性疟则主要分布在中国西南部、南部，对人体危害较大，感染者可持续发烧20小时以上，如不及时治疗，可能发展成严重疾病，甚至致命。此外，三日疟和卵型疟在流行区亦有分布。
