The success of the Hope Probe’s Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) has brought the UAE under the spotlight once again with #ArabsToMars topping trends: a whopping 2.7 billion engagements around the world.
The milestone mission marked the Arab world’s entry alongside global weights in the space race and catapulted the UAE as the first Arab nation, and the fifth in the world, to reach the Red Planet.
Global news outlets, including the CNN, BBC, Euronews, France24, Reuters, AFP, AP, New York Times, The Guardian, Washington Post, The Observer and The Independent, closely followed the historic event.
Cairo: The Arab world has expressed overwhelming jubilation as the UAE made history with its Hope probe entering the Mars orbit.
The UAE became the first Arab country to reach the Red Planet Tuesday when the orbiter successfully landed at the plane after a seven-month journey.
In a gesture of celebration, the Cairo Tower, a Nile-side landmark, Tuesday night lit up in red displaying the phrase the “Hope probe” in Arabic.
Egyptian media, meanwhile, gave massive coverage of the historic event in its news bulletins and primetime TV shows.
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al Sisi congratulated the UAE on the successful Mars mission, describing it as an unprecedented step. “I followed with pride the arrival of Hope probe at Mars, which is an unprecedented step in the scientific research field, promising a scientific renaissance in the Arab region,” Al Sisi said on Twitter.
See you in Mars, China and USA.
Hope Probe is now in Mars orbit and waiting for China’s Tianwen-1 dual orbiter-rover to arrive in Mars on Wedensday (February 10, 2021), while NASA’s Perseverance rover will make a landing attempt in an area on Mars on February 18. All three Mars missions were launched in July last year. The Hope Probe has travelled over 435 million kilometres to Mars after liftoff from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Centre in July 2020.
