decade in the making ever since scientists determined during a major earthquake there is a better than a one in four chance that the dam here would fail. and that would basically make that 2017 flooding that we were just talking about look like a puddle comparatively. the danger is very real here because the dam sits on two large fault lines. the dam and the lake. and studies show wide areas of the land around the dam could liquefy. the flooding two years ago was some of the worst on coyote creek and in the san jose area in decades. but if the dam fails, flooding would be catastrophic, threatening to sweep away people and their homes. scientists just began evaluating this site in spring to finally start construction design work. people have criticized the water district for not starting construction sooner. the design work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. but actual construction still won t begin until 2022. the water district will give people a better idea
