New Columbus law encourages healthy drinks on kids menus


A new Columbus ordinance designed to encourage children to drink healthier beverages appears largely symbolic.
The ordinance, approved Monday by City Council, requires restaurants to list drinks such as low-fat milk, water or 100% fruit juice as the default option for kids meals. Restaurants that violate the ordinance face the prospect of small fines.
It’s unclear how many, if any, restaurants are impacted by the ordinance. City officials say kids menus are in compliance as long as they don t exclusively list a soda or other sugary drink.
That would appear to exempt many popular Columbus restaurants. Kids menus at restaurants including the Rusty Bucket, 101 Beer Kitchen, Roosters, Cap City, TeeJaye s and The Old Bag of Nails, either don t mention the type of beverage included with meals or include options like milk.  ....
