There are good grounds for optimism after the guardrails of American democracy held firm through to Joe Biden s inauguration today as President, writes Stephen Hoadley.
Pessimism abounds about the perilous condition of American democracy. Commentators and headline writers proffer memes such as ‘broken and divided nation’, ‘the threat from within’. ‘democracy in peril’, and ‘on the cliff edge’.
Donald Trump’s refusal to accept the legitimacy of the November 2020 election result was only the latest in a series of his outrageous breaches of long-standing courtesies, precedents, and laws, and his undermining of respected institutions.
